After quite a while resting on my more or less laurels (past listings) it's time to get a move on and put up some more listings. My goal is five books every day from now on. This should be achievable, but not according to my past performance.

These books get listed in three places: on Amazon, Biblio, and Half. Books without ISBNs (older books) generally will not be listed on half. My prices might vary between these three places. Amazon and Half tell me competing prices, so I peg mine on them. Thus, if the lowest price for Deadly Percheron is $98 on Amazon, I might peg mine at $95. If it weren't my only copy maybe I'd be more reasonable. In fact, I think my Biblio listing is more reasonable.

Going forward (and possibly backward), links to titles of books will send you to the main Amazon listing. My listing will be somewhere amidst the other maybe 237 listings. This is where my photo of the book can be seen, which will probably be a better one than the one Amazon features. Half doesn't let me attach my own photo—at least I don't think it does. Photos are also at biblio. Lots of older listings still don't have photos. Nor updated prices.

I've been lousy at selling direct via email. Sorry about that, if you've tried me. Listing through the major portals keeps me honest—also prompt and reliable.

02/25/04 WED:
---Reading on-line: When John Kerry's Courage Went M.I.A. (Senator Covered Up Evidence of P.O.W.'s Left Behind) in The Village Voice. And: Vote Kerry (or Edwards, or Kucinich) (Voice Writers Make Their Pitches for the March 2 Democratic Primary).
---Which doesn't mean I espouse these pieces or necessarily commend them. They just happen to be what I read on-line. Most of my magazine and newspaper reading occurs off-line with the subscriptions I get. That stuff is usually more than enough to keep my free--and too much unfree--time occupied. That said, however, I can say that Christgau's contribution to the above strikes me as well-said.
02/24/04 TUE:
---Getting slower and slower at putting new listings up on biblio.com, but I did manage to get another batch up today. I just posted Mic- to Rei-, including Pyramid paperbacks. If I ever finally get everything put there, then whenever I get new listings I can have versions that are not space-constrained, as they are for the paper catalog. (What paper catalog?)

---Good to see a new Rock&Roll& column by Robert Christgau “An Act of Piety: Peter Fletcher repays his debt to music, to every music in the world.”

---Received “requested information about the following book on Feb 23, 2004 at 01:57 AM:
Mundy, Talbot. TROS OF SAMOTHRACE
Appleton-Century '34, 1st (US), hardcover, ex-libr else g (no dust jacket) . (Book #00207)
Price: 20.00
Customer inquiry:
Can you give me more info on the condition of the book? Or even better can you email me a picture of it?
Thanks.”
(about my listing of the book on biblio.com).

---My reply:
“I wish I had a digital camera to take a picture of the book. That would be easier than trying to describe it verbally, except the picture(s) might not show it properly. Anyway, it is not too bad a copy. There is a library stamp on the title page and a "Withdrawn" stamp mark. The date "1934" is also on the title page. Copyright is "1925, 1926, 1934" with no further printing indication on the copyright page. The binding is weak but holding. There is also a stamp mark on the front past-down endpaper indicating the book was rebound in 1937. The pages are aged but look clean and all there. It would not be a bad copy for reading. Page count: 949 pages (with a "I" in parenthesis at the end). There is a pretty clean pocket removal on the back paste-down endpaper and another "WITHDRAWN" stamp mark (evidence there was no post facto bookseller activity on behalf of the book's condition to remove the pocket, I guess). Weight of the book is just over 2 lbs. I don't know if all that describes it well enough. Let me know if you have any further questions.”

---It would be easier for me if he would buy the book to find out. I don’t think he would be too disappointed by it. As a collectible, I am not so sure, being an ex-library and rebound, but I would sure rather read the thing in this contemporaneous form than some new reprint that would probably cost more anyway.

---Checking for pricing and cataloguing info for a used book, I came up with another place to add to my bookmarks: GEMM (The Global Electronic Music Marketplace). Mostly music, which might be useful to me personally if not professionally in future, but here the book listed was:
KAINEN,RAY SATYR TREK BOOK LON VG (Very Good) publisher: Olympia Press size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall Paperback 1971 edition: First UK Edition Explicit erotic science fiction novel. $87.64
---Maybe I will price mine at $87.63.
---But Fantasy Centre in the UK has the book listed:
Ray Kainen. SATYR TREK. Olympia Press (UK), 1971. Paperback. Pornographic sf novel. Fine. £30.00
---Following a sponsored link to aLibris, I find some other books by Ray Kainen:
1. A sea of thighs by Kainen, Ray for $15.95

---I just finished off my commitment to BMG Music Club, getting 12 CDs for the price of one. Ends up the average price per disc was $4.16, including postage and handling. Not a bad deal, but all the ones they tried to get me to take further at half price or $5.99 per disc plus shipping and handling would have only increased the average. Better to just cancel membership now and join again later, if I can find enough to get--not always that easy a proposition. I doubt the artists see much in royalties from these sales anyway.

“Hi all,

Lots of good stuff going on around here. We've just started shipping Zoran
Zivkovic's The Fourth Circle, and it's moving briskly.

In March, we've got three books for you:

We're reprinting The Ancient Track : The Collected Poetical Works of H.P.
Lovecraft, which has been out of print for about a year.

We're releasing the trade hardcover edition of Bubba Ho-Tep. The DVD will be
out in May, and we highly recommend you pick it up (the book and the DVD!).

And yes, finally, The House on the Borderland : The Collected Fiction of William
Hope Hodgson vol. 2 will be out the first week of March.

And in other shipping news, if you ordered a lettered edition of The Empress of
Mars, they have been shipped and are en route to you.

The third sig sheet for the Lambshead Disease Guide ltd has been turned in by
Alan Moore, and only three more signatures are needed to complete the fourth
sheet. So the limited will DEFINITELY be shipping in March.

The Ghost Pirates and Other Revenant of the Sea, the third of our Hodgson
volumes, is now available for order, and you can check out the table of contents
on our website. Due out in October.

And on a completely different note, Jeremy has been up here in Portland for the
weekend, and we have spent the entire weekend watching cool movies from the 70s.
We highly recommend that you check out a documentary called A Decade Under the
Influence, which is all about 70s independent cinema. Interviews with people
like Altman, Coppola, Scorsese, Robert Towne, Dennis Hopper, Eastwood,
Bogdonavich, etc. Two thumbs up.

That's about it for now,

---Received an email order that required me to restart in OSX to read without all the gobbledygook. This meant a little fooling around with iTunes, causing me to come up with a new CD COMPILATION--#15. I played it while trying to get through watching the DVD of BIRTH OF A NATION from Netflix. The music provided with the silent movie I was not too smitten by, so I muted it and played my own. My new compilation played through okay. No great shakes, but I will probably enjoy hearing it now and again. Anyone else want any, I have fired off a few extras: as always, free for the asking. ---Readied a new set of package insert sheets this morning. Making printouts from websites of books featured besides the paperback listings worked out very well, even if it ended up being a bit more time-consuming. The art pen set I picked up at the Dick Blick Outlet Store on the way home from Urbana-Champaign after dropping Neil off worked nice for the writing in of member-discount prices. I wish I had some artistic or creative ability: those pens would be great for cartooning or even doodling.

---Sent out an email update to people on my list giving catalog listings for books that came in since the last one I sent back in November. The thing seemed to be a bit long for one emailing, so I divided it into three parts. I plan to send Part 2 on Thursday and Part 3 on Friday.

---Always nice to see a new Village Voice Pazz & Jop, with Christgau’s essay and dean’s list, plus all the comments from his hipster critics panel. I only count four of his Dean’s List choices in the consensus top fifteen, but a few of them were probably B Pluses or Honorable Mentions. This means that as an Xgau acolyte I leave unheard the latest by such crowd favorites as 50 Cent, Radiohead and Jay-Z, but not necessarily these artists’ earlier (or subsequent) efforts. I do not feel deprived because I think I have more than replaced the consensus choices with some fine but sometimes not easy choices I have here stockpiled, trying to get a chance to listen to them all under my ironclad regimen of playing firsttime, secondtime and thirdtime successively--unfortunately leaving for later the umpteen-timers I would really like to play.

---Word from Golden Gryphon about a new one it looks like should be here soon:
“Greetings from the Gryphon:

TWO TRAINS RUNNING, by Lucius Shepard, is now available!

In early 1998, Lucius Shepard – winner of the Nebula, Hugo, and World
Fantasy Awards – embarked on a new journey, riding the rails throughout
the western half of the United States, his “neighbors” the disenfranchised,
the homeless, the punks, the gangs, and, yes, even the joy riders. He then
gathered together these facts, along with rumors and innuendoes, and
melded them into his fiction, thus creating this unique collection of fact and
fiction entitled Two Trains Running. In addition to the original Spin Op-Ed
piece, this volume also contains two novellas written in Shepard’s award-
winning inimitable style: “Over Yonder” and “Jailbait,” published here for the
first time.
In “Over Yonder,” suffering alcoholic Billy Long Gone chases a stranger,
who supposedly stole his dog, onto a black train – a train like no other Billy
had ever seen or rode: a living train. The train passes through strange,
arabesque, monster-infested landscapes as it journeys to Yonder – a likely
paradise where a few hundred hobos live within the confines of a majestic
tree in apparent peace and tranquillity. But every paradise has its price,
and in Yonder, peace and tranquillity breeds complacency and . . . startling
deaths.
A hardcore tale of deception, lust, revenge, and murder, “Jailbait” takes
us into the seedy underbelly of rail yards and train hopping: Madcat, who
functions best in a whiskey-induced haze, must decide between solitude
and companionship when he meets up with Grace, an under-aged runaway.

---Email rec’d:
“Hi Chris,
I haven't received a catalog or email update from you in a while now, so
I was wondering if you are planning to sell exclusively through Biblio.
You have been one my favorite book sources, and I'd like to keep
ordering from you, but I was not sure if I should try the Biblio site or
wait for a catalog or email listing from you.”

---My reply:
“I am really trying to get print catalogs back going. I only have a portion of my inventory up on biblio.com so far and there is not as easy to browse through everything as a print catalog, I don't believe. Plus so many people don't want the expense and bother of email, and I can hardly blame them with all the spam and worms out there. I will send you my latest Recent Arrival printout (10 pages presently). It might be a little much to paste into this email. Check out my weblog for more recent things incoming. Also, I should be sending out an email update with a quick rundown of what has arrived since last update. If you are not in my mailing list for that, let me know if you want to be there."

---Bigtime snow shoveling this morning, but not half as bad as prognosticated. The stuff was a half foot or so deep but dry and fluffy. Local school has a snow day. Guess I will have to walk to the post office today (instead of ride my bicycle).

02/01/04 Super(bowl) Sunday:
---Heard from Neil. He is going to that O'Reilly Digital Democracy Teach-In in San Diego next week. Turns out he was sent a V.I.P. pass he doesn’t want to pass up. And I can’t blame him. He thinks it might be a good place to find an internship or something. He does seem to be going places. There was an AP story that ran in a lot of newspapers yesterday or maybe today where he received prominent mention.
